Congratulations to the 2008-2009 SCAC Grant Award Recipients!
The Asian Cultural Association was awarded $2000 to hold in-class interactive lectures/demonstrations featuring international and local Indian musicians, dancers, and artists teaching about Indian music, arts and culture as well as other school programs.
Wekiva River Players were awarded $2000 to provide Junior and Repetory Theatre workshops for students in grades 2-5 (kids), 6-12 (Juniors), and 7-12 (Repetory). The classes provide experiential learning and performance opportunities in musical theatre. Acting, voice, and dance classes will be offered, for 3-4 months, ending in performances which will be open to the public.
Goldsboro Elementary Magnet School was awarded $1000 to host an event in which attendees are given "Eurail" passes to visit countries such as Italy, Ireland, Spain, Germany, France and Greece, and be entertained by performers representing each country through music and dance. This event will also include dramatic readings of folklore, craft projects, art work, ethnic food, and information on typical school days, housing, and family life in each country.
Lake Howell High School Theatre Department was awarded $1000 to feature a performance of the musical Once On This Island, featuring a large multicultural cast. The high school's Step Team and Hip Hop Club will perform, and the drama class will perform a stage reading from "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf." The performance is scheduled for February 13th, as part of Black History Celebration.
Creative Sanford was awarded $2000 which will help the group to collect Oral Histories, from the people of Seminole County, in order to craft a yearly theatrical experience, titled "Celery Soup," based on a "compelling theme that arises from those stories." |
Since 1995, with the support of the Seminole County Board of County Commissioners, the SCAC has awarded more than $250,000 in grants to individuals and organizations, and supports county-wide programs including "Arts in Education" and "Arts in the Community". In 2007/2008 SCAC provided funding support to organizations such as the Asian Cultural Association, Midway Safe Harbor Center , Boys and Girls Club, Creative Sanford, Girl Scouts, Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center, and Seniors for a Better Community are some of the beneficiaries of the grant program. This program is funded in part by the Florida's "State of the Arts" license plate program created by the Legislature in 1994.
